Are you living in Italy and need to renew permesso di soggiorno (residence permit)? It’s a crucial process, and knowing what to do can save you a lot of hassle. Here’s a breakdown of how to renew your permesso di soggiorno.

When to renew your permesso di soggiorno

You must begin the renewal process 60 days before your current permesso di soggiorno expires. You’ll need to do this at the Questura (police headquarters) where you are registered.

The renewal process

  1. Get the Kit Giallo

Head to your nearest post office and ask for the Kit Giallo (yellow kit). This is the application Kit for renewing your permit. Is the same you used to ask for your first permesso di soggiorno.

  1. Fill Out the Kit

Complete the form in the Kit Giallo and gather the necessary documents. The process is similar to your first application, with a few differences:

• Choose #8. rinnovo (renewal) instead of #7. rilascio (release).

• Complete #18-20 with the information from your previous permesso di soggiorno.

• #47 does not need to be filled out.

  1. Gather Documents

-For All Types of Stay:

• Photocopy of your passport or other equivalent identification document

• Photocopy of your accommodation document

• Photocopy of your income document

           -Additional Requirements for Students:

• University students: Photocopy of your certificate of school attendance with a record of exams taken

• Language school students: Photocopy of your certificate of enrollment

• Photocopy of proof of financial resources to support yourself for the duration of your stay (e.g., income statement if working)

• Photocopy of a health insurance policy, valid in Italy, covering illness and accidents for the entire duration of your permit

  1. Submit the Kit

• Attach a Marca da bollo (revenue stamp) worth 16 euro, available at any Tabacchi (tobacco shop).

• Bring your permesso di soggiorno and submit the completed Kit Giallo at the post office. Always keep the Ricevuta (receipt) that you receive.

• You will need to pay approximately 100 euro.

  1. Attend the questura appointment

At your questura appointment, bring:

• The ricevuta (receipt of application)

• Your passport

• 4 recent passport-sized photos

• Your expired/expiring permesso di soggiorno

• Any missing documents (if applicable)

  1. Wait for the physical card

After your Questura visit, you will need to wait for the designated date to collect your physical card. In the meantime, you can check your application status online.

Notes

  • Ensure that all your photocopies are clear and legible.
  • Keep all your receipts and documents organized.
  • Be prepared for potential delays or changes in the process.
  • If you only have the ricevuta, you can travel only to your home country until you receive the physical card.
  • If your permesso di soggiorno has not yet expired, you can still travel with it even after submitting your renewal application.

Renewing your permesso di soggiorno might seem complicated, but by following these steps and preparing your documents in advance, you can navigate the process smoothly.
